The older we get the more we rely upon our memories for mild entertainment during those quiet moments in our lives. More often than not some random event will trigger one even when we aren’t looking to take a stroll through our past.

For example, a short minute ago I was doing a little YouTube viewing and as I was watching some vocal coach reviewing Robyn Zander in a live performance of “The Flame” I was carried back to this one strange evening in the late 1980’s.

I can’t really pinpoint the reason but I received a lot of female attention during that period of time. Not that I’m complaining or bragging, it was just a fact and this memory serves to illustrate one night in particular.

It was the start of a weekend and I’d been invited to go to Catherine and Cheryl’s apartment to hang out and maybe hit a pub or some such. I am not sure what happened but for some reason I fell asleep in a chair in their living room. I don’t recall much other than waking up and letting myself out. My hosts had gone to bed at some point, likely out of boredom. That or my snoring. So I quietly left them sleeping and jumped in my car to go home.

As I was driving down Kingsway late into this lost evening The Fox started playing “The Flame” by Cheap Trick and naturally I cranked it. My late model Camaro was a decked out “Boom Car” complete with an 18 inch woofer in the rear deck and the song never sounded better.

I am driving down Kingsway singing out joyously in my own little rock and roll world, not noticing the car pacing beside me. Eventually I look over and it full of young, attractive women. The driver is mocking me as she mouths the words I am singing to one of my favorite ballads.

The other 5 gals are all in some state of undress as they are either flashing me their breasts or giving me full moons pressed up against the closed windows. This all got my attention and I tried to get them to join me up at the Knight & Day but I guess it was too far for them and they turned off.

Oh well nothing left to do but go home. Home was a mid sized, two floor house just down the road from Coconuts Night Club. There were four of us sharing the place and we had one friend couch surfing with us for a while. Darryl Bowie had just gotten back from a European Tour with Annihilator as they backed up Judas Priest, and he needed a place to crash.

I get back in to the house to find Darryl had brought a couple of women back from the club with him. I guess the one gal got herself worked up by being the third wheel and immediately started trying to seduce me. Sadly, while she was very attractive, I just wasn’t into hooking up with someone I didn’t know at all.

Good thing for me as it turns out, she was pregnant and could have been looking to lay a trap.

Ah the things that conjure up a memory.
